A medieval town on the edge of the bay
The jewel of the Baie de Somme, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme charms visitors with its medieval upper town, its cobbled lanes, its ramparts and its flower-filled houses. It was from here that William the Conqueror set sail for England in 1066. Ringed by fortified gates, the town looks down over the quays and the bay, where great history meets vast landscapes.
What to see and do
- Climb up to the upper town and follow the ramparts and their medieval gates.
- Wander the flower-lined quays and the seafront, facing the bay.
- Take a guided crossing of the bay, or a ride on the Baie de Somme steam railway.
- Head out to Cap Hornu for a panorama over the bay at sunset.
Making the most of it
Come at high tide to see the bay in water, or at low tide for its vast expanses of sand. Eighteen kilometres from the hotel (around 30 minutes), the town is best enjoyed over half a day, ideally outside the busiest summer hours.
