The Pointe du Hourdel

The largest seal colony in France

At the Pointe du Hourdel, at the southern entrance to the Baie de Somme, France’s largest seal colony comes to rest: harbour seals and grey seals settle on the sandbanks uncovered at low tide. From the shingle bank, it is a fascinating sight.

When and how to watch

  • Come at low tide, ideally two to three hours before low water.
  • Bring binoculars or a spotting scope: the animals stay well away, and that is exactly as it should be.
  • Check the tide times and keep an eye on the returning water, which can come in fast.

Watching without disturbing

Seals are wild, protected animals. The regulations require you to stay at least 300 metres away: coming closer sends them fleeing into the water and puts the young at risk. For a rewarding and respectful outing, go with a local nature guide.
